Maximum length of working time

The maximum length of working time in Ireland is 48 hours a week. It is calculated as an average of 4, 6 or 12 months (depending on the job). Rest periods, holidays, sick leave, maternity leave, etc. do not count for this period.

Minimum length of a rest period

An employee is entitled to a 15 minute rest after working for 4.5 hours and another 15 minute break for every additional 2 hours of work. These rest periods are not paid. An 11 hour rest period must be provided within 24 hours.

Minimum length of holidays

Three different methods are used to calculate holidays of employees in Ireland and the employer may choose the method:

  1. An employee working at least 1,365 hours in one year (either from April to March of from January to December – depending on the employer), i. e. 26.5 hours a week on average, is entitled to a maximum of 4 weeks of holidays
  2. An employee working at least 117 hours in a calendar month is entitled to 1/3 of the week of holidays (i. e. a total of 4 weeks of holidays a year)
  3. Holidays account for 8 % of hours worked throughout the year (again either from April to March of from January to December – depending on the employer), however a maximum of 4 weeks.

Minimum wage

The minimum wage is 8.65 Euro per hour for so-called experienced adult employees.
